we can talk about alternative medicine all we want, and put it in terms of what’s “proven” or not
but people absolutely need to be willing to address the fact that these practices come from cultures that are systematically disenfranchised in our society and they face hurdles that western biomedicine gets a giant leg up on
i.e. wealthy investors, government subsidies, lobbyists, and a whole slew of powerful people who have a shitload of money riding on these drugs being approved and legitimized
whereas popular culture insists on fetishizing and reducing things like Chinese medicine to tiger dongs and aphrodisiacs and the people who adhere to these traditions face constant discrimination and lack of funding, so they’re unable to even enter into the arena where they can prove the validity of their traditions
which in itself is messed up because people shouldn’t need the approval of outsiders in order to continue their cultural legacies
just saying

something that is really fascinating to me is that a LOT of spoken communication is about tone, facial expression, and little audio/visual cues that indicate how words must be understood in a particular context, while the words themselves don’t change
so when we acquired telephone communication, we lost the ability to detect facial expression, so we had to rely more on tone
and in transitioning into text-based communication systems that are completely devoid of audio and facial clues we’ve constructed all these ways in which to inject different tones into the same words via punctuation and spelling, and we created facial expressions out of text as a replacement for our own faces
and when you look at the differences across internet communities you see how each group has adopted ways of conveying anger, joy, or indifference in varying ways by capitalizing some letters here or talking in bullet points there or italicizing some words all over the place, and oftentimes going into another internet space can be as drastic as trying to learn another dialect
that’s pretty cool
In late December of 2003, security cameras at Hampton Court Palace, a huge tudor castle near London, captured a startling image. Security guards were unsettled to repeatedly find a fire door open when no one was apparently around. Upon checking the security tape, they were shocked by a ghostly figure, closely resembling King Henry VIII (who died in the 1500s).
Vikki Wood, a spokesperson for the Palace, said “We’re baffled too—it’s not a joke, we haven’t manufactured it. We genuinely do not know who it is or what it is.” They aren’t a ppc company, or even a company looking to gain from this oddity; they are just as baffled like most people who look at this footage.
A security officer, James Faukes, called the incident “unnerving,” and said they’d ruled out their costumed guides. “In fact, they don’t even own a costume like the one worn by the figure on the video. It was incredibly spooky because the face just didn t look human,” Faukes said.
